What We Do
The Genealogical Society of Allegany County, Maryland is a non-profit organization of genealogists. We research our ancestry and family history, and are interested in preserving our family heritage for future generations.
Activities
The Genealogical Society of Allegany County meets the third Thursday of the months of March, June, September and November. These meetings are held at 1:00 p.m. at the Continuing Education Building of Allegany College of Maryland on Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, Maryland. There is a picnic in August and a Christmas luncheon in December.
Research Library
The Research Library of the Genealogical Society of Allegany County, Maryland, is located in the Appalachian Collection of the Library at Allegany College of Maryland, 12401 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD. Hours are: Monday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; Tuesday, Noon to 4 p.m.; and the 2nd & 4th Wednesday, 2-5 p.m. The library is open year around but is closed on legal holidays and in inclement weather (winter), and when ACM is closed for various college breaks. If traveling a distance, it is wise to call ahead.
The Research Library contains many family histories, as well as a great deal of historical and genealogical material, not only for Allegany County, MD but for those counties and states that border Allegany County. Check often for new material which is donated and/or purchased frequently!
Appointments
Sometimes it just isn't possible to visit the library during the hours that we are normally staffed by volunteers. Call 301-777-8850 on Monday to make arrangements.
Research Library Directions
From I-68, take exit 44 to Allegany College of Maryland, Willowbrook Road. Follow Willowbrook Road for about a mile. The College Library is the first building on the left after entering the campus. The Appalachian Collection is located in the back right corner of the library.
